Challenge 25 & Age-Restricted Products Policy

If you purchase an age-restricted product from Cedar Outdoors, you must be at least 18 years old.

Although the legal minimum age for the products covered by this policy is 18, we operate Challenge 25 as an additional safeguard.

This means that if you appear to be under the age of 25, you may be required to provide satisfactory proof that you are aged 18 or over.

If you cannot provide acceptable proof of age when requested, the sale or delivery may be refused.

Challenge 25 does not mean that you must be 25 to purchase an age-restricted product. It simply means that customers who appear to be under 25 may be asked to prove that they are at least 18.

Products that may be subject to an 18+ restriction include, where applicable:

• knives;
• knife blades and replacement blades;
• axes, hatchets and similar bladed tools;
• machetes and similar cutting tools where their sale is lawful;
• articles incorporating a blade or sharply pointed component where legislation restricts their sale;
• crossbows and relevant restricted products, where lawfully offered for sale;
• adult fireworks and sparklers, where lawfully offered for sale;
• butane cigarette-lighter refills;
• certain corrosive products;
• certain solvents or volatile substances where their sale is age restricted;
• other products which are subject to a statutory minimum purchasing age of 18; and
• any product that Cedar Outdoors reasonably determines should be subject to an 18+ restriction in order to comply with applicable law or responsible retailing requirements.

An 18+, Age Restricted, Challenge 25 or similar notice may be displayed on relevant product pages and during checkout.

The absence of such a notice does not remove any legal age restriction that applies to a product.

By placing an order containing an age-restricted product, you confirm that:

• you are aged 18 or over;
• the information you have provided is accurate;
• you are legally entitled to purchase the product; and
• you understand that further age or identity verification may be required.

Simply ticking an age-confirmation box does not necessarily constitute sufficient age verification.

Depending on the product and circumstances, Cedar Outdoors may use additional age-verification measures before accepting, dispatching or delivering an order.

These may include checks carried out by Cedar Outdoors, an age-verification service, payment provider or delivery provider.

We reserve the right to request additional evidence of age or identity where reasonably necessary.

Where documentary identification is required, acceptable forms of identification may include:

• a valid passport;
• a valid photocard driving licence;
• a valid PASS-accredited proof-of-age card; or
• another form of identification or approved electronic age-verification method which we reasonably consider sufficient and which is permitted under applicable law.

Identification must be valid and must relate to the person whose age or identity is being verified.

We may refuse an order where identification appears to have been altered, is invalid, does not correspond with the purchaser or otherwise cannot reasonably be verified.

Certain age-restricted products may require age verification when they are delivered.

Where required, the delivery provider may operate Challenge 25 or another appropriate age-verification procedure.

The person accepting the delivery may therefore be asked to provide photographic identification demonstrating that they are aged 18 or over.

For some categories of age-restricted product, legislation or our delivery arrangements may require the parcel to be delivered specifically to the purchaser.

Where this applies, another person at the delivery address may not be permitted to accept the parcel on the purchaser’s behalf.

We may use an Age Verification Required, 18+, Do Not Leave Safe or equivalent delivery service where appropriate.

Age-restricted products must not be left unattended where doing so would conflict with applicable legislation or the conditions of the age-verification delivery service being used.

This may mean that an age-restricted parcel:

• cannot be left in a safe place;
• cannot be left on a doorstep;
• cannot be delivered to a neighbour;
• cannot be delivered to certain parcel lockers or unattended collection facilities; or
• must only be handed directly to an eligible recipient.

The precise delivery restrictions may vary according to the type of product and the delivery provider being used.

Particular restrictions apply to the remote sale and delivery of knives and certain bladed articles or bladed products.

Where applicable, Cedar Outdoors will use appropriate age-verification procedures intended to prevent such products being purchased by anyone under the legal age.

Packages may also be identified to the delivery provider as containing an age-restricted or bladed product and may require age verification at the point of delivery.

Where the law requires delivery to the verified purchaser, the parcel will not be handed to another individual.

Cedar Outdoors may apply these controls to a wider range of cutting tools than is strictly required by legislation where we consider this appropriate for responsible retailing or to avoid uncertainty over the legal classification of a particular product.

If we cannot satisfactorily verify that the purchaser meets the applicable minimum age requirement, we may:

• place the order on hold;
• request further proof of age or identity;
• remove the age-restricted product from the order;
• cancel the affected part of the order;
• cancel the entire order; or
• refuse dispatch.

Where an order is cancelled before supply because the required age verification cannot be completed, any amount due for refund will be returned in accordance with our normal refund procedures.

We will not override an age-verification failure simply because payment has already been taken.

A delivery may be refused where:

• satisfactory proof of age cannot be provided;
• the recipient appears to be underage;
• the delivery provider cannot complete the required age-verification process;
• the required purchaser is not present;
• the identification provided does not match the required recipient;
• the parcel cannot lawfully be left at the requested delivery location; or
• there is another reasonable concern about compliance with an age restriction.

Where a parcel is returned to Cedar Outdoors following a failed or refused age-verification delivery, we will deal with the order in accordance with our Terms & Conditions and applicable consumer law.

Additional delivery charges may be payable where permitted by law and where a further delivery is requested.

Age-restricted products must not be purchased on behalf of a person who is under the legal minimum age.

We reserve the right to refuse or cancel a transaction where we reasonably believe that an adult is attempting to obtain an age-restricted product for an underage person.

Customers must not:

• provide a false date of birth;
• use another person’s identification;
• submit altered or fraudulent identification;
• deliberately circumvent an age-verification system; or
• arrange for an age-restricted product to be supplied to an underage person.

Where we reasonably suspect fraud, attempted circumvention or unlawful activity, we may cancel the order and take any other steps reasonably necessary to protect the business or comply with our legal obligations.

Cedar Outdoors reserves the right to refuse the sale or supply of an age-restricted product where we have reasonable concerns about:

• the purchaser’s age;
• the purchaser’s identity;
• the intended recipient;
• the delivery arrangements;
• suspected proxy purchasing;
• suspected fraud;
• legal restrictions affecting the product or delivery destination; or
• our ability to complete the transaction lawfully.

The fact that an order has been submitted or payment authorised does not require Cedar Outdoors to supply an age-restricted product where doing so would be unlawful or contrary to this policy.

Some products sold in the United Kingdom are subject to minimum ages other than 18.

For example, certain aerosol paints and other goods may have a statutory minimum purchasing age of 16.

Where Cedar Outdoors sells a product subject to another statutory age restriction, the appropriate legal minimum age will apply.

We may nevertheless use a Challenge 25 approach when verifying eligibility to purchase any age-restricted product.

Age-restriction legislation and the legal classification of particular products can change.

Cedar Outdoors may therefore:

• change the age restriction applied to a product;
• introduce additional verification;
• change the available delivery methods;
• restrict delivery to particular addresses;
• withdraw a product from sale; or
• cancel an order where necessary to comply with applicable law.

Any statutory restriction applicable at the time of the transaction takes precedence over this policy.

Our Challenge 25 policy is intended to provide an additional safeguard against underage sales.

Where there is uncertainty, our policy is to take a cautious approach.

No satisfactory proof of age means no sale or delivery of the age-restricted product.
